Fort Wayne, Indiana, has four-season fun, there’s no doubt about it. But, when it comes to summer, its warm-weather offerings really stand out. And, whether you like to get out in the summer heat or stay cool with inside activities, there’s something for everyone. From award-winning zoo visits to creative ice cream sandwiches here are six super fun things to do in Fort Wayne in the summer!

I’m not lying when I write that Fort Wayne is one of my favorite cities in Indiana. Situated in the Northeast corner of the state, its proximity to both Michigan and Ohio make for an easy road trip. And it’s this proximity that makes me want to keep revisiting the city to check out the must-dos. Here’s what I’m loving about Fort Wayne in the summer and what made my must-do list.

Things to Do in Fort Wayne in the Summer: Fort Wayne Museum of Art
My teen daughter wants to turn her love of art into a career in a couple of years. It’s that love of art that makes us happily seek out museums in every city we visit. The Fort Wayne Museum of Art is one of those hidden gems that I could visit over and over again. Compliments of its permanent displays and special area dedicated to children, the manageable-sized museum has become a must-do for me and my family.

Mr. Locke recently made a visit to MoA with me and he was surprised at how much the building can offer. What I really dig about it is its temporary exhibits that are always on par with some of the larger museums. All of its pieces are located on a single floor, so there’s no need to worry about climbing stairs or using elevators, too.

Things to Do in Fort Wayne in the Summer: Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo
There’s no denying that the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo caters to families with kids – its name gives it away! But, would I have a ball there even without taking my teen daughter? Absolutely! The zoo is a manageable size so little ones won’t feel overwhelmed, which is a bonus. What I loved most about it? The ski lift. It’s a fun way to catch an aerial glimpse of the zoo and a few of its residents.

On our last visit, we did get hit with some rain, but honestly, it was just as fun as it would have been without. The Zoo is going through a few upgrades, so be on the lookout for new exhibits in the coming months. One of my favorite spots in the Zoo is its Indiana Family Farm area. It’s a glimpse of life on a Midwest farm and its petting zoo area is a hoot.

Things to Do in Fort Wayne in the Summer: Fort Wayne Tincaps Baseball Game
The Fort Wayne Tincaps make sure that EVERYONE can see a baseball game with its affordable tickets. Not only that, special events, player autograph sessions, and even the cool mascot, Johnny Appleseed, keep the kids entertained in between innings. Ticket prices start at $5.00 and there are options to add on a pre-game buffet meal, too. A local favorite, the Bad Apple Dancers, grab huge applause for their silly choreography between the 6th and 7th innings.

Things to Do in Fort Wayne in the Summer: Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory
The Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory in the heart of Downtown Fort Wayne is a nice respite from the summer heat. This year, summer events include Family Garden Close-up, “Bugs!” Live Butterfly Exhibit, “Art of the Garden: Daniel Dienelt at the Conservatory”, Jazzworks!, and a
Botanical Roots Concert Series.
If you’re unable to make it Fort Wayne in summer, spring is my next favorite time to visit The Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory. Its “Perspective” Butterfly Display. Each day, new butterflies emerge from their cocoons and are carefully placed into a massive exhibit tent to check out up close. The fun is watching them flutter about and trying to snap photos of their colorful wings.

Update: Yummi Bunni, my fave ice cream restaurant in fort Wayne, has recently closed its doors and deleted all social accounts.
Things to Do in Fort Wayne in the Summer: Yummi Bunni
Here’s the “scoop” on Yummi Bunni. Take a freshly-made glazed donut, add two scoops of premium ice cream, and then roll it in your fave cereal or crunchy topping. That’s a Yummi Bunni.
Located on West Main Street in Downtown Fort Wayne, the ice cream shop has a super cool, retro vibe, great staff that are more than willing you help you narrow down your choices, and a fun wall perfect for decadent photos. Did I mention that it’s affordable, too? A Yummi Bunni ice cream sandwich is only $5.

Things to Do in Fort Wayne in the Summer: Science Central
I’ve always written that the best way for kids to learn is when they don’t realize they’re learning. And, while it makes a perfect place to visit when the weather isn’t cooperating, Science Central is my choice for teaching kids about science fun any day of the week. The former City Light and Power building, the STEM-loving spot is floors of science, tech, engineering, and math fun.
The adult benefits? You get to learn right along with the kiddos. Check the schedule before you go as Science Central is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Where We Stayed in Fort Wayne
We really enjoyed our stay at Ramada Plaza Fort Wayne Hotel & Conference Center. The beds we super comfy and the location was ideal for our visit.

A huge draw for families is its indoor/outdoor pool. And, if you’d like to spend a few extra dollars, look into the Concierge Level benefits. With a lovely breakfast, snacks, and dinnertime hors d’oeuvers, it’s definitely worth the upcharge in my eyes.
Disclosure: I was graciously hosted by the folks at Visit Fort Wayne to give you fine folks the scoop on its summer fun! All opinions are my own!
