I LOVE Broadway plays and musicals. As in, I still have my Barbra Streisand “The Broadway Album” – and it’s still well-played. Mr. Locke? He likes them. So, completely winning him over was my goal for BroadwayCon 2018. This year, we made the trek from Pittsburgh, PA, to Manhattan to check out what makes BroadwayCon such a fun event. I came back with tales of bliss and Mr. Locke came home with an true appreciation of the fandom that surrounds Broadway. From my favorite picture of Lin-Manuel Miranda to fan costumes, here’s opening day of BroadwayCon 2018 and why I’m already making plans for next year.
BroadwayCon 2018 Opening Day Highlights
We had only a couple of days in New York City to really dig in, and we spent most of that time at The Javits Center. For the third year in a row, it’s been the home of BroadwayCon. For the third year in a row, Broadway lovers have been flocking in droves to purchase memorabilia and catch glimpses of their fave stars. And, for the third year in a row, attendance just keeps on rising. Hitting the ground running, we had opening day to get our fill of Broadway fun.
On the BroadwayCon Marketplace
Each day of the three-day event attendees have an opportunity to visit the Marketplace in between events. Gold and Platinum Passholders have access one hour early before the masses are let in. If you do have that early-entry access, you can get a ton accomplished. There were dozens of vendors available (including Tee Rico!), info on classes and cyber-training, and plenty of opportunities to sign up for giveaways and drawings.
We were ready to check it out at 9am along with the Gold and Platinum Passholders and there was plenty of room to move. As the day went on, the crowds got crazier but it definitely wasn’t a deal breaker. If you’re planning a visit next year with a General Pass, you’ll still have a great time.
BroadwayCon 2018 Speakers
Throughout the day, we had the opportunity to take in a few panels featuring guest speakers and Broadway stars. Truly enlightening, each gave fun insights into what it was like to be in a particular play or musical. What I liked best? The behind-the-scenes glimpses and funny stories. If you’re a Broadway fan, listening to the speakers is a must!
BroadwayCon 2018 Opening Ceremony
There’s no better way to showcase BroadwayCon 2018’s opening ceremony that with a video. Anthony Rapp, Billy Porter, Betsy Porter, and Kelli O’Hara sang their hearts out. If you haven’t had a chance to watch Betsy’s version of “Meadowlark”, check it out!
In the Heights 10th Anniversary Reunion!
Truth? I had my proverbial eye on the prize for BroadwayCon 2018 – the 10th Anniversary reunion for In the Heights! with 10 castmembers including Lin-Manuel Miranda, Javier Muñoz, Christopher Jackson, and Karen Olivo, hundreds of us listened to funny tales and poignant memories for an hour.
Moderated by Luis Miranda, the time passed entirely too quickly. One of my fave parts of the discussion panel was listening to songs that were cut from the musical. It was amazing how, even after 10 years, the cast remembered their favorite sons that were removed.
A very touching moment was definitely watching Luis Miranda’s (Lin-Manuel’s father) love for the musical and how Lin-Manuel gave him a walk-on part for his birthday.
BroadwayCon 2018 Attendee Costumes
look, if you need a good excuse to dress as your favorite Broadway character, BroadwayCon is the place to do it. Filled with Newsies, Wicked, and Hamilton character costumes, we had a brilliant time circulating through the crowds to snap photos. Here’s a few of our faves:
Alexander Hamilton from Hamilton made an appearance.
As did King George from Hamilton.
This fan costume from Waitress was definitely worth taking a photo of.
BroadwayCon 2018 In a Nutshell
Here’s my two cents: fan of Broadway or not, the convention is a hoot! There’s plenty of opportunities to shop, watch, dream, dress up – you name it. truly, it was a massive highlight from our visit to Manhattan. As for Mr. Locke, well, let’s just say his newfound appreciation of all things Broadway will not go unnoticed. I’m queuing up my Babs record for him soon.
Disclosure: We received press passes to cover the events at BroadwayCon 2018. All opinions are my own!
