If you only went to Savannah, GA, for the rich history alone, you’d have an amazing experience. Then, add in the fact that there’s so many things to do in Savannah from foodie spots to land and water tours and it ramps up the fun even more. Here are my 9 top picks for fun things to do in Savannah with kids!

Fun things to do in Savannah with kids: Old Town Trolley Tours
Old Town Trolley Tours is a must do if you want to see Savannah via wheels.

If you want a fun, rolling tour of Savannah, Old Town Trolley Tours is a the way to go. Once you’ve got your ticket for the day, you can hop on and off at your leisure to delve further into the history.

For over 30 years the company has given insightful sightseeing tours highlighting the best attractions in Savannah. Personally, I found our guide fun and entertaining, not to mention humorous.

Check Out a Market

City Market in Downtown Savannah is the spot to go if you like sampling local cuisine. Additionally, you’ll find local art shops, clothiers, and quaint shops galore. At night when it cools off, look for free live concerts and entertainment.

Learn About Prohibition in Georgia

Fun things to do in Savannah with kids: Prohibition Museum
The American Prohibition Museum in City Market serves fun, non-alcoholic drinks as well as traditional ones.

The American Prohibition Museum in City Market is probably my teen daughter’s favorite thing to do in Savannah. When you step inside the only museum in the U.S. dedicated to prohibition, there are tons of hands on exhibits and a couple of cool surprises including a real speakeasy.

Check Out Some Adorable Toe Beans

Fun things to do in Savannah with kids: Pounce Cat Cafe
Pounce Cat Cafe is perfect for families wanting to check out (and give some love to!) adorable kitties.

Pounce Cat Cafe is an ideal place for families that want to hang out with adoptable kitties. Now, I’m not writing that you have to take any cats home, but they sure are adorable. Plus, toe beans. The cafe is super popular, so you’ll want to make a reservation in advance.

If you work up a thirst, there are wine and coffee drinks available.

Mosey Through the Squares

Fun things to do in Savannah with kids: Savannah squares
Checking out the Savannah Squares is a fun lesson in city history.

In Downtown Savannah, squares were created to be the hub of each area. Women would gather in the morning to cook and bake and, of course, learn the daily news and gossip.

These days, Savannah’s Squares are more of a means of respite from the heat for folks walking around town. They also offer some history, too. If you have some free time, you’ll definitely want to check out all 22 squares in the one-mile square in Downtown.

Try the Best Cookies in Savannah

Fun things to do in Savannah with kids: Byrd's Famous Cookies
Delicious Lemon Coolers at Byrd’s Famous Cookies in Savannah.

My personal opinion, of course, but Byrd’s Famous Cookies are right at the top. The perfect bite-sized cookies, head into one of its stores near The Market and grab a sample before you buy. My personal pick? The Lemon Coolers.

See Where Life Is Like a Box of Chocolates

Fun things to do in Savannah with kids: Chippewa Square Forrest Gump
Imagine a bench directly in front in Chippewa Square. That’s where Forrest Gump sat in the movie.

From Savannah Squares and cookies to one of its most famous squares and chocolate, if you’re a fan of the movie “Forrest Gump” you definitely have to check out Chippewa Square. Remember the scenes where Forrest is waiting to catch the bus to Jenny’s place and he chats with locals about his life? That all happened in Chippewa Square.

Roll on a River

Fun things to do in Savannah with kids: Savannah Riverboat Cruise
A super cool way to see Savannah from the water via a riverboat cruise.

Seeing a city from the water makes it even more enjoyable for me. On our visit, we hit the decks of a Savannah Riverboat Cruise for a 90-minute tour and had a ball. We were able to cool off inside in the air conditioning and also walk around the decks to get a 360 degree view of Savannah and its river.

There are a few options for tours but I, personally, liked the 90-minute tour. It was just enough time to learn about the city and its waterways while getting a glimpse of what water travel would have been like via an actual riverboat.

Cool Off with the Best Ice Cream in Savannah

Fun things to do in Savannah with kids: Leopold's Ice Cream
Leopold’s Ice Cream is old school cool, literally.

I like to consider myself an ice cream aficionado and I’m telling you right now, Leopold’s is it. The original ice cream parlor has the old school cool feel and vibe and its ice cream flavors are fun and creative. Molly loved the Rose Petal Cream and Japanese Cherry Blossom, both delicate in texture and flavor. My pick? Savannah Socialite with its milk and dar chocolate, Georgia pecans, and bourbon-infused caramel swirl.

Tip: Leopold’s is super popular so arrive when it first opens for the shortest wait.
