10 Big Travel Trends That Will Fade with Generation X

As we the people of Generation X age and transition into retirement (how is that even possible when I still feel like I’m a 16-year old!), certain travel trends are likely to diminish in popularity. These trends have been shaped by the travel experiences and preferences of Gen X, but as younger generations take the reins, new travel trends and behaviors are becoming more and more popular. Here are 10 travel trends that will fade with Generation X.

Travel Trends That Will Fade with Generation X

It’s crazy to think that my daughter, now aged 22, has a different perspective on travel. But, if I think about the way that I used to travel with my parents, there are some big differences. Having written that, it’s inevitable that each new generation learns from the last, especially with keeping the planet and their bank accounts in mind.

1. All-Inclusive Resorts

10 Big Travel Trends That Will Fade with Generation X - all inclusive resorts

The appeal of all-inclusive resorts, offering a one-stop-shop for accommodations, food, and activities, has been strong among Generation X. However, younger generations, particularly Millennials and Gen Z, often prioritize more personalized and immersive experiences. They seek out off-the-beaten-path destinations and are more likely to embrace local culture and cuisine.

2. Package Tours

The structured itineraries and guided tours that were popular with Generation X are becoming less appealing to younger generations. These groups prefer greater flexibility and autonomy in their travel experiences. Thanks to the internet, they now ask about self-guided tours or create their own itineraries based on interests and preferences.

3. Travel Trends That Will Fade with Generation X – Large Group Travel

Generation X often enjoyed traveling in large groups, especially with family or friends. But, younger generations are more likely to travel in smaller groups or even solo. They value privacy and the ability to customize their travel experiences to make the most of their vacation.

4. Focus on Luxury Brands

While Generation X often associated luxury with status and prestige, younger generations are more concerned with value and authenticity. They are more likely to seek out unique and sustainable experiences, rather than simply staying at branded hotels or resorts. Recently, I’ve seen cool, boutique hotels popping up more than giant, luxurious resorts.

5. Travel Trends That Will Fade with Generation X – Emphasis on Material Possessions

Generation X often prioritized acquiring material possessions, including souvenirs and luxury items, while traveling. Younger generations are more likely to focus on creating meaningful experiences and memories, rather than accumulating physical objects.

Taking my daughter for example, she doesn’t collect one specific item when traveling. Instead, she has a sketchbook where she draws a memory each day. To her, it’s much more meaningful than a fridge magnet.

6. Preference for Traditional Accommodations

There’s an increasing interest in on-the-road adventures for those looking to feel like true explorers, as well. As such, road trip accommodations like RV camps and pitching a tent are becoming increasingly popular, getting away from the standard catered experience of the hotel for something much more organic and connected to the environment that’s being explored.

Hotels and resorts have been the traditional choice for accommodation for many generations. However, younger generations are more open to alternative accommodations, such as hostels, Airbnb rentals, and glamping. They seek out unique and immersive experiences that allow them to connect with local communities.

Recently, my husband and I stayed in a Saintlo Ottawa Jail Hostel in Ottawa, Canada. It was the former Ottawa jail and, I’m going to be honest, I was pretty hesitant about communal lodging. But once I got steeled into our double bed jail cell room, I actually enjoyed my visit. It was nice to chat in the common areas with other travelers and the price was unbeatable.

7. Travel Trends That Will Fade with Generation X – Limited Use of Technology

10 Big Travel Trends That Will Fade with Generation X - less technology

While technology has become an integral part of modern travel, Generation X may have been less likely to embrace it fully. Younger generations, on the other hand, are digital natives who rely heavily on technology for planning, booking, and experiencing their travels.

Yeah, I can’t live without my cell phone and Macbook.

8. Focus on Sun and Sand

Beach vacations have been a popular choice for many generations. However, younger generations are more likely to seek out diverse destinations and experiences, including adventure travel, cultural immersion, and eco-tourism. Additionally, solo travel is a biggie for young adults.

9. Travel Trends That Will Fade with Generation X – Limited Interest in Sustainable Travel

While sustainability has become a growing concern in recent years, Generation X may have been less focused on sustainable travel practices. Younger generations, on the other hand, are more likely to consider the environmental and social impact of their travels. Again using my daughter as an example, she carries her own utensils and straws when we travel (I do as well. No shade needed!) and uses them in our hotel rooms, at restaurants, and in the car.

10. Emphasis on Quantity Over Quality

Generation X may have prioritized the number of destinations visited over the quality of the experiences. Younger generations are more likely to focus on fewer destinations and deeper, more meaningful experiences, allowing them to truly connect with the places they visit.
