A visit to Daytona Beach isn’t complete without experiencing the legendary Daytona International Speedway. Known as the “World Center of Racing,” this iconic venue hosts the famous Daytona 500 and other major racing events. Guided tours take visitors behind the scenes, offering access to the start/finish line, the infield, the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America, and even the chance to stand atop the podium.

The Speedway’s museum showcases historic cars and memorabilia, making it a must-see for racing enthusiasts and curious travelers alike.

Walk the Riverfront Esplanade

The Riverfront Esplanade is a scenic, revitalized stretch along the Halifax River, perfect for leisurely strolls, picnics, and outdoor activities. Pretty gardens, interactive fountains, playgrounds, and shaded walking paths make it a favorite for families and couples.

The Esplanade also hosts regular events and live music, providing a lively atmosphere year-round. Its proximity to downtown boutique shops and restaurants adds to its appeal as a cool place to hang.

Climb the 203 Ponce Inlet Lighthouse Steps

Yep, there are 203 steps. Yep, I climbed every one. Image Credit: Karyn Locke

Standing tall as Florida’s tallest lighthouse, the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse is a beacon of history and breathtaking views. Climb the 203 steps (I did it! On a mild weather day, it’s pretty easy.) to the top for panoramic vistas of the Atlantic Ocean, Intracoastal Waterway, and surrounding landscapes.

The lighthouse complex includes a museum with exhibits on maritime history, lighthouse keepers, and shipwrecks. The beautifully preserved grounds and historic buildings offer a glimpse into the area’s nautical past. I really enjoyed moseying from building to building and even catching a short film.

Visit the Pacetti Hotel Museum

Step back in time at the Pacetti Hotel Museum, located in the heart of Ponce Inlet. This historic hotel, dating back to the late 1800s, has been meticulously restored and now serves as a museum showcasing artifacts, photographs, and stories from the region’s early days. The museum highlights the area’s transformation from a fishing village to a popular tourist destination, making it a fascinating stop for history buffs and curious visitors.

Take a Ponce Inlet Watersports Dolphin Tour

For an unforgettable adventure on the water, embark on a dolphin tour with Ponce Inlet Watersports. These guided boat excursions navigate the Intracoastal Waterway and Atlantic Ocean, offering close encounters with playful dolphins, manatees, and a variety of seabirds.

Knowledgeable guides share insights about the local ecosystem and marine life, making the tour both educational and exhilarating. Tours are available year-round, providing a unique perspective of Daytona Beach’s natural beauty. During my and my daughter’s tour, we both got see dolphins in a pod and a couple of manatees.

Check out the Marine Science Center

The Marine Science Center in Ponce Inlet is a hands-on educational facility dedicated to marine conservation and rehabilitation. Visitors can explore interactive exhibits on local marine life, touch tanks with stingrays and hermit crabs, and observe sea turtle and seabird rehabilitation efforts. The center’s boardwalks and nature trails wind through coastal habitats, offering opportunities for wildlife spotting and environmental learning for all ages.

See Beautiful Art at the Cici and Hyatt Brown Museum of Art

Art lovers will appreciate the Cici and Hyatt Brown Museum of Art, home to the world’s largest collection of Florida-themed art. The museum’s galleries feature paintings, photographs, and artifacts that capture the state’s diverse landscapes, history, and culture. Rotating exhibitions and special events ensure there’s always something new to discover.

The museum is part of the Museum of Arts & Sciences complex, which also includes science exhibits, a planetarium, and a children’s museum.

Additional Year-Round Activities

  • Beach Activities: Daytona Beach’s 23 miles of hard-packed sand are perfect for swimming, sunbathing, surfing, and even driving on designated sections.

The Daytona Grande Oceanfront Resort offers a luxurious (and affordable, especially during off-season!) escape literally on the shores of Daytona Beach, blending a modern look and feel with breathtaking (and I mean breathtaking! Try sleeping in when there’s a jaw-dropping sunrise!) ocean views.

Each guest room features contemporary décor, and many even have private balconies overlooking the beach, allowing you to soak in the sights and sounds of the Atlantic without ever getting sand on your feet.
