Pittsburgh Holiday Guide

Families all bundled up whirling their way around a giant Christmas tree surrounded by the clippity-clop of horse hooves. Kids staring at the sky, mouths gaped open in awe of the tens of thousands of Christmas lights. A German Market and fireworks lighting up the night. Can you picture it? Every holiday season, Pittsburgh goes all out and sets this picturesque scene for its visitors and residents. Beginning November 17th and spanning from Point State Park to Kennywood Park, Pittsburgh holiday events are not to be missed! Check out our…

How a Baby Sloth Captured My Heart at National Aviary

There are moments in my life as a travel writer that I have to pinch myself. And, although these moments are happily more frequent and you’d think I’d acclimate to such pinch-worthy moments, any chance to even see a sloth and I’m ready to jump up and down or cry depending on what second it is. Last week, National Aviary gave us the opportunity to get up close with Valentino, the zoo’s resident baby sloth, to feed, pet, and learn all about their new little heart breaker. The best part? Anyone…

Painting with Parrots at National Aviary

When you have a chance to paint with a parrot at National Aviary, you take it.  This little beauty (man, I sounded like the Crocodile Hunter just now) is Lucky the Blue-Fronted Amazon Parrot. Not only does Lucky love to paint but the creative outlet is a way to mimic experiences that would naturally occur in the wild like picking up sticks to build nests. There are a few other birds at the aviary that enjoy painting and each has its own painting style, if you can believe it. Lucky…

Hey Kid, There’s a Flamingo on Your Knee!

When we visit National Aviary, we never know what birds or other animals we’ll encounter. It’s fun to walk around, point out birds that are our favorites, and look for ones we’ve never seen before. On our last visit, we had the experience of a lifetime- Zookeeper for a Day. The Kid and I learned exactly what it takes to take care of hundreds of avian creatures (and a sloth named Wookie), what goes into their diets, and even had a behind the scenes moment with the flamingos in the Wetlands Exhibit.…

National Aviary’s Night in the Tropics: The Five F’s for a Fabulous Fiesta Fundraiser #UpOwlNite

All Photos Courtesy of National Aviary Ok, I know Pittsburgh technically isn’t on a “tropical” latitude or longitude, but once a year it certainly feels that way. National Aviary’s Night in the Tropics is one of its largest yearly fundraisers and draws nearly 1,000 fans who flock to the event (sorry, I just had to!) and all proceeds will support the education, avian medicine, and conservation programs for its 150 bird species- and a Linne’s Two-toed Sloth named Wookie. This year’s fiesta promises to best the best yet with fabulous…

What’s New at National Aviary: Condor Court

Any chance to visit the National Aviary is another chance to check out all of the sweet feathered flyers- and Wookie the Sloth. This week I was asked to visit the Aviary for an awesome, new reason: Condor Court. The brand-spanking new outdoor habitat is home to two pairs of Andean Condors, and the massive birds now have a new place to show off their 10-foot wingspan. The only accredited zoo in North America to exhibit two pairs, the aviary is happily showing off its efforts with the hopes that…

Baby Penguins at The National Aviary Make Their Debut #PenguinChickPGH

Photo Courtesy of The National Aviary Those of you that read my blog are very aware of my love for The National Aviary in Pittsburgh. Not only does it have a sloth (my favorite animal), but the fuzzy, feathery birds make my heart melt. I had a duck as pet in college (a whole other blog post!) and I feel that birds are some of the cutest creatures on earth. My family is a member of the National Aviary which was a wise choice for us and we try to…

National Aviary Wings in Winter Holiday Show #LovePGH

My family and I love visiting the National Aviary in Pittsburgh. In fact, we adore the place so much that I have an annual pass so we can check out the birds anytime we feel like driving into the city. Families flock (haha! I wrote flock.) to the aviary during the summertime when school is out to play in Penguin Point or watch a show in the Wetlands. But have you ever visited during the winter holidays? The National Aviary has a fun holiday-themed show filled with fun sing alongs,…
