Hiking is an amazing pastime, but it can seem daunting, especially if it’s your first time. Which trail should you use, and how should you prepare for your first trip? Also, how can you make it enjoyable for you and everyone involved? While this certainly won’t be an exhaustive list of things to do to make you a happy hiker, we will offer some salient points of advice to get you started. Read more below.

How To Prepare for Your First Hiking Trip – Always Layer

Layering is important since the temperature changes according to elevation. While you may be uncomfortable when close to ground level, it may get progressively colder the higher you go. Getting the right layering method down could mean the difference between a fun and miserable experience on your next hike.

A good system is versatile, breathable, insulating, and moisture-wicking. Generally, you’ll have merino base layers that hug your skin, a mid-weight layer, and an insulating layer that keeps you warm. Finally, you’ll have an outermost layer to help you with the brunt of rain and sleet.

Use your best judgment when determining how many layers you need, since each of these layers can amount to more than three articles of clothing or fewer, depending on your needs. Do you require more warmth? Can you get away with two insulating layers rather than all three? Is it going to rain? Keep these questions in mind, and also consider that your layering system might change depending on the weather. The more variable the temperatures are, the more likely your system will change.

How To Prepare for Your First Hiking Trip – Find a Good Beginners Trail

Your first-time hiking shouldn’t be overtly challenging; you don’t want to run out of steam before you even start. Choose a local, short, and moderately challenging trail, so you don’t feel like it’s too easy for you. You’ll want to go online and search when the best hiking times are, as well as what pitfalls you may find when hiking there. What are people saying about the trail? These are all important factors to consider when you’re just starting.

When you finally get on the trail, pace yourself, or you won’t reach the end. You don’t want to rush headlong onto the trail. Keep in mind that this isn’t a race or a competition; you’re just there to have a good experience and get in touch with nature—so don’t rush it. You’ll be surprised how much you can take in when you’re taking your time and enjoying yourself.

How To Prepare for Your First Hiking Trip – Eat and Drink Well

Having the right food and drinks on the trail is essential. You’ll want to stay hydrated as much as possible. We can’t stress this enough, as it’s essential in preparing for your first hiking trip. Carry 32 ounces or more of water in your pack since dehydration can cause serious problems, regardless of the weather conditions.

Furthermore, you’ll need to bring some carbs and protein. Otherwise, you might become dizzy and pass out from overexertion. Low blood sugar and excessive fatigue are very real hazards on the trail. It might be wise to bring trail mix, beef jerky, fruit strips, or peanut butter sandwiches. All these hiking food essentials are packed with protein. Don’t forget to save a snack for the end!

In short, the trail holds many challenges. However, it doesn’t have to be difficult if you are amply prepared. As long as you take the proper precautions, you’ll have an enjoyable and memorable experience. Happy hiking!
