With events for all ages and interests, Danville, Virginia, and the surrounding areas offer a Halloween season filled with memorable moments and a touch of Southern spookiness. Recently, I had the absolute pleasure of checking out Danville and Pittsylvania County and found the area right up my proverbial street thanks ot its love of all-things Halloween. Here’s a peek at the fun and what you can expect when you visit.
1. Stroll Through the Millionaires’ Row Halloween Decorations

Millionaire’s Row, known for its grand Victorian and early 20th-century mansions, becomes a fun Halloween spectacle each year. Homeowners along the street go all out with elaborate decorations—think glowing jack-o’-lanterns, cobweb-covered porches, and eerie lighting that highlights the district’s historic architecture. On Halloween night, hundreds, if not thousands, of costume-clad children go door-to-door trick-or-treating!
While a daylight walk is still pretty, an evening walk through this area offers a perfect mix of elegance and Halloween spirit, making it a must-see for visitors and locals alike.
2. Take the Ghosts and Gravestones Walking Tour

The Old West End Historic District, known for its ornate homes and rich history, becomes the setting for a historical walking tour each October. Guides lead participants through dimly lit streets while sharing eerie stories of the neighborhood’s past residents, unexplained happenings, and current haunts. The combination of beautiful architecture and chilling tales makes this tour one of Danville’s most popular Halloween traditions.
The Old Grove Street Cemetery, one of Danville’s oldest burial grounds, has been added to the area’s walking tour, blending history with haunting tales. During the Ghosts and Gravestones tour, participants can explore the resting places of notable Danville residents while hearing stories of the city’s past, mysterious legends, and ghostly encounters. The tour’s paths and quiet atmosphere create an unforgettable Halloween experience steeped in local lore. My favorite? The cast iron graves for two Dame children.
3. Dance the Night Away at the Zombie Prom
For those who prefer a lively celebration, the annual Zombie Prom is a highlight of Halloween in Danville and its spooky season. Eighth- to twelfth-graders in the local high school dress in their best undead attire and enjoy an evening of music, dancing, and costume contests. The event often features live DJs, themed drinks, and prizes for the most creative zombie looks, making it a fun and spirited night for adults looking to celebrate Halloween in style.
4. Celebrate at the Main Street Buzzard Festival

The Main Street Buzzard Festival in Chatham brings the community together for a day of Halloween-themed fun. The festival features live entertainment, local vendors, food trucks, and family-friendly activities. Visitors fill the streets, and the event’s quirky buzzard theme adds a playful twist to the traditional fall festival atmosphere.
5. Visit Owens Farm Pumpkin Patch

Owens Farm offers a classic autumn experience with its pumpkin patch, hayrides, and seasonal treats. Families can pick the perfect pumpkin, whether it’s still on the vine or already picked, visit a small animal farm, play in the playground, or even pet bunnies. The farm’s welcoming atmosphere and scenic countryside setting make it a favorite destination for visitors of all ages during the Halloween season.
