Nestled in the heart of northern West Virginia, the new Coopers Rock Stargazing Cabins offer a unique experience that blends modern comfort with the natural beauty of the Appalachian wilderness. Designed for folks seeking tranquility, adventure, and a front-row seat to the cosmos, these cabins redefine outdoor lodging in one of the state’s most beloved and most beautiful parks.

Coopers Rock Stargazing Cabins: A New Way to Experience the Night Sky Location
The Stargazing Cabins are located within Coopers Rock State Forest, approximately 15 miles east of Morgantown, West Virginia, just off Interstate 68. The forest spans nearly 13,000 acres across Monongalia and Preston counties, known for its dramatic sandstone cliffs, scenic overlooks, and dense hardwood forests.

The cabins are situated near the park’s quieter eastern section, away from the main overlook area, to minimize light pollution and maximize visibility of the night sky. I, personally, loved the location of the cabins and found both the proximity to a main interstate and hiking locations ideal.
Coopers Rock Stargazing Cabins: A New Way to Experience the Night Sky: Uniqueness
What sets the Coopers Rock Stargazing Cabins apart is their integration of astronomy and eco-luxury. Unlike traditional park cabins, these units are specifically designed to enhance the stargazing experience through architectural innovation and minimal light interference. The cabins’ location within one of West Virginia’s designated low-light zones ensures exceptional visibility of constellations, meteor showers, and even the Milky Way on clear nights and early mornings – I can attest.
Additionally, the cabins are part of a broader sustainability effort. Solar panels provide partial power, rainwater collection systems support landscaping, and all construction materials were sourced locally to reduce environmental impact.

A New Chapter for West Virginia State Parks
The Stargazing Cabins at Coopers Rock State Forest represent a new era of outdoor lodging in West Virginia—one that celebrates both the serenity of the forest and the wonder of a light-pollutionless night sky. Combining comfort, sustainability, and celestial beauty, these cabins offer a one-of-a-kind retreat for those seeking to reconnect with nature and the stars above.

Stargazing Cabins Amenities
The Stargazing Cabins combine rustic charm with modern luxury. Each unit includes:
- Panoramic Skylight Roof Panels: Tempered glass ceilings above the main sleeping area for almost-unobstructed views of the stars.
 - Private Outdoor Deck: Equipped with reclining lounge chairs and a telescope mount for personal stargazing. It’s particularly gorgeous at sunrise and sunset.
 - Climate Control: Energy-efficient heating and cooling systems for year-round comfort. Additionally, there’s a separate heating unit for the bathroom.
 - Kitchen: Compact kitchen with a full-sized refrigerator, microwave, induction cooktop, and coffee maker with coffee pods.
 - Bathroom: Full bath with walk-in shower and eco-friendly fixtures.
 - Wi-Fi and Smart Lighting: Adjustable lighting in both the upstairs and downstairs areas. Yes, there’s wifi, but it’s a hotspot style and was spotty during my stay.
 - Fire Pit: Outdoor cooking and relaxation space surrounded by native landscaping.
 - Telescope: Yes, there’s even a large telescope upstairs for looking at the night sky.

Okay, if I had my big asks, there would be two. First, the stairs to the upper bedroom are very slippery. Please use caution, especially if wearing socks. Second, there’s a big difference in temperature between the lower and upper levels. It’s not a deal breaker at all, but my daughter did have to sleep with the room windows open upstairs to keep a moderate temperature for me in the main bedroom downstairs.

Room Layout
The cabins are available a two-bedroom-style with the following:
Two-Bedroom Cabin
- Sleeps up to four guests (two single beds upstairs and a two-person bed downstairs).
 - There are two ADA accessible cabins at this time. When the full area is complete, there will be 12 cabins available.
 - Three pet-friendly cabins make for a nice way to bring the furry friends to Coopers Rock State Forest.

Additionally, there are large picture windows that frame the forest and sky, creating a seamless connection between the indoors and outdoors. At night and first thing in the morning, it’s stunning.
