You could argue that Alaska remains something of an underrated gem. Despite visitor numbers to The Last Frontier increasing significantly in recent years (it now welcomes more than 3 million visitors each year), the state continues to be one of the least visited in the United States.
Maybe it’s because travelers imagine that getting to Alaska is hard work, or they’re not sure what the state offers, but in any case, you can imagine that the visitor numbers would bump up significantly if people knew what was on offer!
And so, that’s why we’re here. In this post, we’re going to run through just some of the many outstanding reasons why Alaska deserves to be at the top of your travel bucket list.

Unparalleled Natural Beauty

We’ll say it — Alaska is the most beautiful state in the United States. It’s jam-packed with natural areas that are truly sublime. Denali National Park is the standout of the state, but it’s far from the only place in Alaska that is jaw-droppingly special. There´s also:
- Glacier Bay National Park
- Hubbard Glacier
- Kenai Fjords National Park
- Dawes Glacier
- And much more!
If you’re a nature lover, then Alaska will be your paradise. And if you’re not a nature lover, then we all but promise that you will be by the time your trip is over!
There’s Plenty of Wildlife to See

Those mountains and tree landscapes aren’t just nice to look at; they’re also home to some pretty awesome creatures! Alaska is filled to the brim with stunning wildlife, giving visitors the chance to see some of the finest animals on the planet in their home environment.
There are almost too many to list here, but let’s just say that if you like bears, moose, whales, caribou, and bald eagles, then you’ll be in for a treat during your stay in The Last Frontier. There’s every chance that you’ll come across one or two of the more mild animals on your own, but if you want to see the bigger creatures (like bears), then sign up for a guided tour.
You Can See Glaciers

It’s not every day that you get to see a glacier, but then, it’s not every day that you’re in Alaska. This state has more glaciers than you can shake a stick at, and let us tell you, you won’t be disappointed by going the extra mile to ensure that you see as many of them as you can. Though if time is tight, then one will suffice just fine.
It’s impossible for us to rank the glaciers or say which ones are worth visiting, since they’re all special in their own way! The most famous and most visited glaciers are Hubbard Glacier, Dawes Glacier, Mendenhall Glacier, and Holgate Glacier.
The Food Is Exceptional

When you think of Alaska, it’s unlikely that you think of food. But that’s only because the state has so many other standout features that you won’t find anywhere. In that context, you can forgive people if they overlook the state’s cuisine.
Once you’ve tried the state’s best dishes, however, you’ll be hooked. There are some truly delicious dishes to be found in Alaska, including, of course, dishes that incorporate the wildlife that calls the state home. At the top of your list should be fresh wild salmon, which is exceptionally delicious. It’s also worthwhile seeking out reindeer sausage, Alaskan king crab, moose stew, and sourdough pancakes.
…And You Can Also Catch Your Own Dinner

Tried some Alaskan salmon, and want to try catching it yourself? The state has long been recognized as one of the world’s best fishing destinations, but you don’t have to be a world-class fisherman to get into the water and catch your own dinner. Ketchikan Alaska fishing charters are novice-friendly, ensuring that you can have a memorable experience on the water — and make sure that you return home with a great photo of you holding a salmon that you and your traveling companions have caught. With that said, having a fun guided fishing experience is about more than how many fish you catch. Simply being out on the water in such a beautiful area can be hugely enjoyable.
There Are World-Class Hiking Trails

The United States is no stranger to amazing hiking trails. Yet, even by the lofty standards set by California, Oregon, and other awesome hiking destinations in the US, Alaska offers something truly special. This land is filled to the brim with exceptional trails that will take your breath away. There really is something magical about going on a long excursion in an environment that feels so invigorating. The only problem is that there are arguably too many to choose from! If you’re unsure, then start with the hikes in Denali — you will not be disappointed.
You Can Stay Up Late In Summer

Visiting during peak summer? You’ll have the fun experience of enjoying sunlight late into the night. Pay a visit during the longest day of the year, and, depending on how far north you go, the sun won’t set at all. It’s pretty special to take a walk in the sunshine at a time that you normally associate with darkness.
And See The Northern Lights in Winter

And if you thought the midnight sun was fun, just wait until you see what the state has to offer in the winter months. It can be dark and cold during this period, sure, but it does have a pretty great ace up its sleeve: the northern lights. They’re not guaranteed (indeed, that’s why they’re so special), but if you stay for more than a few days in the right area, then you should have a chance to see them.
It’s Surprisingly Easy to Visit

Finally, a big reason to plan a trip to Alaska is that it’s a lot easier to get there than you might think. It’s well served by flights and cruises. Once there, you can simply rent a car and pay a visit to all the great sites.
