How Much Should You Spend On A Ring For Yourself (And Not Regret It)?

When it comes to splurging on yourself, we all have opinions. Some of us are frugal, and others want to live life while we can. But how much should you spend on a ring for yourself without regretting it? Here’s the breakdown.

First, you’ll want to set a comfortable budget. The average person probably shouldn’t spend much more than 1 to 3% of their annual income on a ring. Therefore, if you’re earning, say, $40,000, then that equates to between $400 and $1,200.

This keeps the amount you spend reasonable. Blowing this amount of cash on an accessory isn’t going to wreck your finances, even if it might dig into your savings a little.

When it comes to shopping for rings, you also want to prioritize what matters to you. For example, you could get sterling silver with a small gemstone if you want to keep it at less than $1,000, or you could buy something more expensive than that if the highest quality materials matter most to you, like diamonds and platinum.

If you are planning on spending a lot of money, think about how often you’ll wear the ring. If it’s every day, then yeah, you might want to spend more. But if you’re only going to include it in an outfit every month or less, then it might not be worth it.

For me personally, I have a mixture of really expensive rings and ones that cost a few dollars. When I travel, I prefer to take the less-expensive ones in case I lose one. If that ever happened, I wouldn’t be as heartbroken as I would have been if it had cost thousands of dollars – just something to keep in mind.

Think About The Quality

You also want to consider the quality when deciding on how much to spend on a ring. If you can grab an heirloom item, that’s a great option because it combines material quality with craftsmanship.

Furthermore, you’re not just getting a ring for yourself. You’re also buying something that you may want to hand down through the generations as a family. A ring might pass from mother to daughter over several generations.

Not 100% Sure? Try Sleeping On It

If you’re still not sure about whether you should splurge on a ring for your next outfit, sleep on it. See how you feel about spending the money in the morning and whether it is still worth it.

Remember, sometimes your desires will be transitory–you’ll want the ring, but you don’t have to have it, and you will quickly move on. Other times, your desires are more permanent, and that’s when you need to pay attention. Ogling the same ring for several weeks usually means it is something you know deep down is going to make you feel happier and more confident if you ever get the chance to go out and wear it.

Factor In Your Lifestyle

At the same time, you’ll want to factor in your lifestyle. If you’re the sort of woman who works with her hands and is always in the gym, then an expensive ring probably won’t serve you that well. When can you wear it?

By contrast, if you’re always socializing and going to swanky events in places like Beverly Hills, then it makes sense to spend more. After all, it’s going to provide you with more value.
