As a seasoned traveler, you probably think you’re past risks like homesickness. But, then, you set off on the trip of a lifetime, only to find that this problem comes along and settles right in as an unwanted travel companion.  Like almost any other illness, homesickness really can happen at any time, and it could well turn a peaceful trip into a stressful vacation that you’re simply keen to work past. But we’ve got good news for you – homesickness needn’t be fatal.

Just like taking medicine for a common cold, there are things you can do to lessen your homesickness symptoms and have a great time. Here’s the scoop from a lady who constantly travels and misses her own home.

Nothing gives homesickness a freer reign than sitting around feeling sorry for yourself. So, avoid that at all costs by simply keeping your itinerary packed. After all, it’s hard to dwell on what you’re missing when you’re out there getting the best of every day through fantastic excursions, daring explorations, and plenty of endorphin-releasing exercise.

If homesickness is hitting you hard, it’s especially worth booking plenty of outdoor plans, as the fresh air and new sights can sweep away the cobwebs and bring you right back into the present moment. Equally, planning social activities like guided tours, is great for giving your day purpose and ensuring that you’re not lost to your own thoughts.

For me, it’s when I’m getting ready to go to sleep after a big day of travel. I like to have my favorite television shows queued up on my computer to zone out to.

There have been days when I’m constantly video chatting with my husband and kitties because I miss them so much. Knowing they’re only a phone number away does make a real difference and helps to quell the need for home.

Tips To Stop Homesickness - food from home

If you’re missing home, then why not get a taste for it through the food you eat while you’re away? This should be especially easy to do if you’re traveling elsewhere in the US, as familiar brands like Chanticlear have restaurants in Ramsey, as well as many other locations. Equally, it’s always possible to pop into a friendly Taco Bell and know exactly what you’re going to get whether you’re in Washington or Vermont.

Even if you’ve gone further afield than your home borders, eating in, or finding home-style diners in your location, can help you by simply enjoying your top dishes from home. While it’s a small thing, this will be more comforting during a long trip than you know, and could give you just the boost you need to get going again.

Tips To Stop Homesickness - connect with people

A lot of homesickness guides will tell you to stay in touch with people back home, and we second that advice. However, it’s important that you don’t solely communicate with a phone screen.

In truth, your trip will be a lot better, and a lot less lonely, if you also take the time to connect with the people around you. This is especially true if you’re able to find fellow Americans, as the cultural similarities will make it feel like you’re back home with your mates. Alternatively, learning language basics, and immersing yourself in somebody else’s culture, could be just the distraction you need for a great trip.

Homesickness can certainly harm your trip, but we swear to you that it needn’t be fatal with these tips.
