If the wide open roads of the Lone Star State are calling, you have come to the right place. The second-largest state in the U.S. (only behind Alaska in the Northwest), each city and area offers something new and unique. From planning ahead of time to choosing the right accommodations, here’s an easy guide to creating the perfect Texas road trip. Let’s go!

There is a wide range of vehicles that you can choose for a road trip across Texas and honestly, it depends on the vibe and budget you want. The first is a simple car, but because of the long distances involved, you may be better off choosing something like an SUV. Indeed, an SUV will provide you with more room and comfort on your journey and will have a bit more power when the terrain gets challenging.

Another great choice of vehicle for your Texas road trip is an RV. The big benefit of an RV is that you have your accommodation with you at all times, which can be much more convenient than having to plan or find somewhere to stop each night. It’s even legal to park on the roadside in an RV in Texas, although these rules will differ from city to city and county to county, so it’s best to read up on them before you start doing this.

Plan Your In-Car Entertainment

The state of Texas is almost 700,000 square kilometres, which means there is a lot of road to cover when visiting. It also means that you’ll be driving for a long time, so you must plan some in-car entertainment that will allow you to focus on your driving but keep you alert and awake.

Many people enjoy listening to music during their Texas road trip, while others choose audiobooks. It’s also best to travel with a buddy and swap who drives regularly or make frequent stops for rest.

Plan Your Route

There are all sorts of well-worn routes that you can choose from during your Texas road trip. One one is the route known as the Big Texas, which includes Palo Duro Canyon and Cadillac Ranch. You may also want to consider a route that takes you by the stunning landscape of Big Bend National Park and then on to Terlingua. Although there is plenty of scope for you to plan your own custom route as well.

Plan Your Accommodations

Once you have your vehicle and entertainment sorted, consider the accommodation you will use. There are many great value motels in Texas just off the highway, so these make a convenient option for those travelling in SUVs or cars.

If you have an RV and want access to facilities such as power and water hookups, as well as laundries and showers, staying in venues like Clear Creek RV Park is best. Indeed, even when you can pitch up on the side of the road in Texas, many people prefer the comfort and safety of a properly recognised RV as they travel.

Plan the Attractions on Your Route

Once you have your accommodation and route sorted, you can start to plan your stops in line with the attractions you want to see and the diners and restaurants you want to visit. The most popular of these include The Alamo, the Houston Space Center, and sandboarding in sunny El Paso, Yet, there’s plenty for everyone including the Cadillac Ranch where you get to spray paint your own masterpiece. Of course, it’s well worth doing your research so you can spend your time visiting the places with the most meaning for you!
