Mohican Lodge Review: Back-to-Nature Luxury

Planning a visit to a Great Ohio Lodge can be a challenge because each has its own look and vibe. Add into the mix that they’re called “great” for a reason and it can only add to the difficulty of narrowing down a choice. This spring, I took a road trip to Mohican State Park Lodge and had a chance to explore everywhere. From dining to accommodations and all the freebies, here’s my Mohican Lodge review.

Mohican Lodge Review Pleasant Hill Trail

Disclosure: I was graciously hosted by the fine folks at Great Ohio Lodges to give you fine folks the scoop on what makes each so special. All options are my own!

The second leg of my four part road trip to the upper four Great Ohio Lodges, I quickly learned that Mohican State Park Lodge was made for outdoor lovers. From the beautiful outdoor patio to the hiking trails to the floor to ceiling windows, the property has a laid back vibe that’s perfect for getting back to nature in a luxurious way. Here’s the scoop.

Mohican offers 96 guest rooms varying from two double or queen beds to a single king, each with its own private balcony. The lodge was built in 1974 and has a true rustic feeling from the moment you walk into the lobby area.

As for the property, it sits in gorgeous Mohican State Park, a haven for hiking, biking, walking, birding, and fishing just to name a few outdoor activities.

On our very first drive to the main building, I spotted several deer hanging out near the side of the road so I knew it would be easy to spot wild animals. If you like birding, grab a guide and hang out on the balcony or in one of the solariums if you don’t feel like hiking to see them.

But, by far, the best indoor view is near the fireplace in the lobby. There are plenty of seats to sit, relax, and enjoy the breathtaking view of the woods and lake.

Mohican Lodge Guest Rooms

Mohican Lodge Review Two queen guest room

I know I touched a little on the types of rooms above, so I’ll delve deeper into what’s inside them. Each room offers a large flatscreen television with satellite channels, a mini fridge, and two vanity/sink areas: one inside the bathroom and one just outside.

Again, each room has a dedicated balcony as opposed to the lower level having a patio. I really dig this idea, especially if you have younger kiddos – no worries about them walking away from the room.

There’s also a coffee maker and the usual guest room suspects (hair dryer, iron, alarm clock) but what was really nice was the small table to use for in-room dining. If you need a microwave, there’s one in the lobby area.

For our two double bed room, the beds were very comfortable as were the pillows. There was also plenty of space to walk around so we didn’t feel like we were tripping over each other.

Looking into a visit to Salt Fork Lodge? Here’s everything you need to know about visiting.

Mohican Lodge Amenities

There are plenty, for sure. We checked out two game rooms, a computer center, and even a taxidermist Ohio bird showcase in the lobby. The property offers a heated indoor pool, sauna (it was closed for physical distancing) and a seasonal outdoor pool. outside the lobby is a cool shuffleboard deck that I really wish I’d have tried.

Just a short walk from the outdoor pool area are the tennis and basketball courts. But the shining star of the property, amenities wise, is the gorgeous and paved walking path down to the lake and back.

The Lakeside Trail is lovely at both sunrise and sunset and about halfway through there’s a pretty gazebo to really sit and check out the view.

Mohican Lodge Review Lyons Falls Trail

If you want a good hike, drive down to the Pleasant Hill Dam and take the Lyons Falls Trail to see both the Big & Little Falls. The hike to the falls does involve a pretty steep, wooden staircase. Just something to keep in mind – the hike itself is considered moderate.

Mohican Lodge Dining

The lodge has a large dining room downstairs that’s open for breakfast, Lunch, and dinner. At this time, it has an abbreviated menu which it to be totally expected. But, given the smaller menu, there was no shortage of serving size or flavor.

Bromfield’s Restaurant has a gorgeous view of the back property, so grab a table near the window if you’re able. Also, get ready for some serious leftovers because the portion size is big.

If I had to pick menu favorites, definitely try the General Tso’s Cauliflower. I’m not a cauliflower fan and this dish was incredible. Also, you can go wrong with one of the desserts, particularly the carrot cake.

If you want snacks or drinks, head to the gift shop off the lobby. It has everything from ice cream to soda to candy and plenty of Mohican merchandise.

Mohican Lodge Freebies

MOHICAN STATE PARK LODGE REVIEW

With all Great Ohio Lodges, being a guest gives you plenty of freebies. For Mohican, there’s free high speed WiFi which gave us zero issues during the stay. Additionally, there’s free parking, fee use of the on-site activities and free coffee and tea in the lobby.

In a Nutshell

Mohican Lodge Review Lyons Falls hiking

While I was given a complimentary stay in exchange for this honest review, I would pay out of pocket to stay at Mohican Lodge again. I loved the property and its staff simply delightful and compliments of its out of the way location, it’s a darn good excuse to unplug and enjoy nature.

As for the on property amenities, they were plentiful and kept both me and my teen daughter well occupied for the entirety of our stay.
