Hot Springs National Park, nestled in the Ouachita (Pronounced WASH it aw) Mountains of Arkansas, is a unique destination that has captivated visitors for centuries. Known for its thermal waters, stunning scenery, and rich history, this national park offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The Healing Tradition

The park’s thermal waters have been revered by indigenous peoples for centuries, who recognized their healing properties. In the 19th century, the area became a popular health resort, attracting visitors from across the country. The historic Bathhouse Row, a collection of eight ornate bathhouses, is a testament to this era.

The Hot Springs Bathhouse Experience

A visit to Hot Springs National Park wouldn’t be complete without indulging in a rejuvenating bathhouse experience. The historic Fordyce Bathhouse is open to the public for tours only as it’s part of the National Park system. When in full operation, Bathhouse Row offered eight locations for visitors to relax and rewind.

During my visit to Hot Springs, I had the pleasure of receiving a true, full bathhouse experience at Buckstaff Bathhouse. Featuring a bubbling mineral bath, hot towel treatment, a sitz bath, hot boxing (where every body part but your head is inside a giant, steamy metal box), and a 20-minute massage, the experience is one I’ll never forget. The process left my skin feeling thoroughly cleansed, my muscles relaxed, and my overall well-being recharged.

A Modern Twist: Superior Bathhouse Brewery

For a more contemporary experience, visiting the Superior Bathhouse Brewery is a must. This local brewery offers a wide range of craft beers, from classic lagers to innovative IPAs. The brewery’s taproom is a popular spot to relax and enjoy a cold beverage with friends.

I spent a few hours at Hot Springs Brewery hanging out where the beer is made and learned so much about the company. Yes, it’s actually a former bathhouse that uses actual Hot Springs water. It also serves a variety of meal selections and offers both indoor and outdoor seating.

Why a Park Ranger Tour is a Must

Taking a guided tour in Hot Springs National Park is a must, in my opinion, if you really want to learn about the area. Image Credit: Karyn Locke

A guided tour with a park ranger is the best way to truly appreciate the history and natural beauty of Hot Springs National Park. Rangers offer a wealth of knowledge about the park’s geology, history, and wildlife. They can also share fascinating stories about the people who have called this place home for centuries.

Having written that, I truly did enjoy touring with an NP ranger. The day before, I spent some time on my own walking along the paths and reading about the history of the park. But with a guided tour, I learned so much more about the area, the Fordyce Bathhouse, and even walked to the proverbial “hot spots” while downing safe-to-drink water that hasn’t seen the light of day for 4,400 years – the amount of time it takes to filter through the rock and return to the surface.

Beyond the National Park

Beyond the thermal waters and historic bathhouses, Hot Springs National Park offers a variety of outdoor activities. Visitors can enjoy hiking, biking, and birdwatching on the park’s many trails. The nearby Ouachita National Forest provides even more opportunities for outdoor recreation, including camping, fishing, and boating.

Where to Stay in Hot Springs

If you’re looking for a real back-to-nature lodging experience, my personal pick is Starlight Haven. Only a few minutes from downtown, the property offers Safari Tents (where I stayed) and Geodesic Domes. Yes, I felt like I was surrounded by nature the entire time – but with a full kitchen and hot tub to add to the fun.

During my stay, I had both a queen bed and a futon-style couch should I need the extra lounging room. The bath was complete with an indoor toilet (yes, I felt I needed to mention that), a beautiful shower, and a sink. Again, I wasn’t roughing it at all. It was a beautiful melding of nature and luxury; that’s my kind of roughing it.
