Mary Poppins has been a movie staple in my home for as long as I can remember. Not only has the film always been on my favorite Disney movie shortlist, a tribute to Mary has been my Halloween costume at Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party for several years. Of course, Mr. Locke is always a great accompaniment as Burt, too. But this year, Walt Disney Pictures has up’d the practically perfect ante and just released the Mary Poppins Returns official trailer! I’ve watched it several times now, and there are five things I’m loving. From original movie homages to original cast members, here are five details I’m living for in the Mary Poppins Returns full trailer!
When a Mary Poppins sequel was announced in 2016, my first thought was, “How can they out-do the original? Can they make it better? WILL they make it better?” Then the cast was announced: Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins and Lin-Manuel Miranda as Jack. Dig.
What We Know So Far of Mary Poppins Returns
So, it’s been a hurry up and wait situation for this gal. Until today. With the release of a Mary Poppins Returns teaser trailer, so many questions were answered – but now so many new ones exist in my head. Here’s what we know about the sequel:
In Mary Poppins Returns, “an all-new original musical and sequel, Mary Poppins is back to help the next generation of the Banks family find the joy and wonder missing in their lives following a personal loss. Emily Blunt stars as the practically-perfect nanny with unique magical skills who can turn any ordinary task into an unforgettable, fantastic adventure and Lin-Manuel Miranda plays her friend Jack, an optimistic street lamplighter who helps bring light—and life—to the streets of London.” Thanks, Walt Disney Pictures, for the scoop. Here are my fave tidbits from the full trailer:
1. Mary Comes to Look After The Banks Children
Jane: What brings you here after all this time?
Mary Poppins: The same thing that brought me the first time. I’ve come to look after the Banks children.
Anabel Banks: Us?
MP: Oh yes. You, too.
Love that, while it seems that the next-gen needs caring for, it’s the original Banks children that need it most. It’s at the 40-second mark in the Mary Poppins Returns full trailer if you want to hop straight to it.
2. Emily Blunt Has a Gorgeous Singing Voice
Yep, I already knew this one from Into the Woods, but it’s easy to forget compliments of her more serious roles.
3. Lin-Manuel Sounds Good as a Brit
“As I live and breathe.”
“It’s a good thing you come along when you did, Mary Poppins.”
Two sentences is all it took to make Lin-Manuela believable British character.
4. A Star-Studded Cast
Three words: Dick Van Dyke. He’s playing Mr. Dawes, Jr., the retired chairman of the bank
The film also stars:
- Ben Whishaw as Michael Banks
- Emily Mortimer as Jane Banks
- Julie Walters as the Banks’ housekeeper Ellen
- Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh and introducing Joel Dawson as the Banks’ children
- Colin Firth as Fidelity Fiduciary Bank’s William Weatherall Wilkins
- Meryl Streep as Mary’s eccentric cousin, Topsy.
- Angela Lansbury appears as the Balloon Lady, a treasured character from the PL Travers books
5. Just Like the Original, There Are Live Action Scenes Combined with Cartoon Animation
One of the reasons Mary Poppins remains timeless is the fact that the cartoon animation, mixed with live action sequences, makes for fun. With Mary Poppins returns, the full trailer shows hints and clips of the same style.
What’s even cooler are the costumes during the melded sequences. Mary’s outfits look hand-drawn and cartoon-like.
