You know we never need an excuse to visit Pittsburgh, and when it involves spending the night my bags are already packed, the car’s all gassed up, and we’re ready to enjoy our big city. And, while we’ve never had a bad experience at a Downtown Pittsburgh hotel, your travel style may very well determine which hotel you should choose. Ready for a Pittsburgh hotel compatibility test? We narrowed it down for you to give you the scoop on which Pittsburgh hotel fits your travel style!
Hip and Relaxed
If you’re all about hip and chic with an unusually cool vibe, Kimpton’s Hotel Monaco is your hotel soul mate. The property is a four-walled modern display (even the elevators are filled with it) and the theme and feel of its guest rooms made us feel like we were sleeping in a contemporary art museum gallery. Feel free to borrow a bicycle to navigate the Downtown area and don’t forget Fido – the property is super pet-friendly. There’s also a Social Hour on select nights in the common space filled with wine, beer, and snacks. That’s relaxed hipness, indeed.
Want to personalize your stay? Ask for a goldfish to be delivered to your room. Yep, you can care for it during your entire visit, give it a name, and the best part? It stays when you check out so there’s no need to hit a department store for fish supplies on the way home.
History Buff
Omni William Penn Hotel definitely appeals to the history buff in you. Celebrating its 100th birthday last summer, the property is filled with historical artifacts found on property, the guest rooms are modern but still feel authentically old. Its bottom floor is home to The Speakeasy, a beautiful bar that was home to an actual bootlegging club.
During the holidays the main floor is filled with Christmas decorations and a massive gingerbread house.
Boutique in a Cool Neighborhood

The Ace Hotel in East Liberty will make you want to hit the closest IKEA to completely upgrade your home when you check out. With clean lines and a utilitarian concept, it’s located in a former YMCA building. Depending upon who’s staying with you, there’s four room options from small (250 sq. ft.) to a Suite (450 sq. ft.).
Free wifi and an in-house bar only add to the cool vibe.
Room with a View
If your travel style is all about relaxing your room with gorgeous views, Wyndham Grand Pittsburgh Downtown is your soul mate. Book a room facing Point State Park to wake up to scenic vistas featuring Mount Washington, the three rivers, and the North Shore.
Love fireworks? Literally walk across the street to check out the massive displays during Fourth of July, Light-Up Night, and New Year’s Eve.
Give Me Culture
Pittsburgh is going through a major renaissance with its gastropubs and clean living (green buildings are popping up everywhere!) so Renaissance Pittsburgh Hotel is the place to hang your hat if you’re all about historical buildings with clean lines and amazing service. The property sits in the heart of the Cultural District (translation: you’ll never have to look for a parking spot during rush hour to make it on time for your theater tickets!)
If you’re really wanting to up the hotel ante, book a room in Club Level for complimentary breakfast and snacks in the Concierge Lounge the day during your stay.
Wave that Sports Banner!
Sports fans unite! If you can’t get enough of Pittsburgh’s sports trinity (Pens, Pirates, and Steelers, of course!) Doubletree by Hilton Pittsburgh Downtown is your go-to hotel. With its location in the Golden Triangle, you can literally walk to PPG Paints Area to check out the Penguins or walk across the street to hop on The “T” (Pittsburgh’s super clean subway system) for a free ride to the North Shore to catch the Pirates and Steelers play.
Hanker for something sweet after a drive into the city? Don’t forget to score one of its famous chocolate chip cookies at check in. The property offers everything from two double beds to large suites and the indoor pool gives you a bird eye view of the black and gold fans smiling after a winning game.
