I love chocolate.
Ok, let me clarify: I love GOOD chocolate. The older I get, the more I crave really good, dark chocolate. Not overly-packed with sugar and other additions to change its consistency and taste, whenever we travel we’re always on the the hunt for it. Some people collect magnets on vacation, we collect chocolate.
No kidding. When we head south to the warmer states we always grab local chocolatier creations and a trip to Canada wouldn’t be complete without a few bars of its tasty chocolate.
And, although I’m never one to pass up chocolate that comes in squares or bars, it’s always fun to find chocolate formed in other shapes and sizes.
That’s why I’m loving the fact that American Heritage® Chocolate Bites are now available at Cracker Barrel. Head to one of the 630 Cracker Barrel locations and you’ll find them (along with other American Heritage® Chocolate products including a delicious chocolate drink and larger blocks) stocked on the shelves through July. Once you get them home (if they last that long!), head over to the company’s recipe website for inspiration.
American Heritage® Chocolate- A History in American Cuisine
If you’ve never heard the history of American chocolate, it’s definitely worth the read. 18th Century chocolate wasn’t as sweet as modern chocolate tends to be and there were hints of spices and even spicy notes- just enough to give it a teeny bit of a kick.
Here’s what’s so cool about American Heritage® Chocolate: the company uses a recipe dated from 1750 and makes its chocolate products only from ingredients available in the 18th Century. The recipe incorporates touches of cinnamon, vanilla, orange, and nutmeg and adds a hint of red pepper for that historical kick. Each bite is individually-wrapped in paper and the cute muslin bag the bites come in would make a fun souvenir.
So, just exactly what does it taste like? The texture is not as creamy or silky-smooth as modern chocolate recipes and the taste not as sweet, but I have to admit, I’m totally hooked. And the cylindrical-shaped, bite sized pieces are perfect for eating as a snack or sharing- if you can bear to part with them. I haven’t tried the other products yet, but you can totally bet that the next time I visit a Cracker Barrel Country Store I’m stocking up.
